August 2025 Topic of The Month: 40th Anniversary, Open House

We hit a major milestone this year: 40 years of Western Neon!

To celebrate, we opened the shop doors for an Open House / 40th Anniversary. Not only to honor the rich history, but to share the energy of where we’re headed. What was once a small neon art gallery on 1st Ave decades ago has grown into a comprehensive creative shop dedicated to designing, fabricating, and restoring custom signage and public art, from concept to installation, throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Owner Andre Lucero, General Manager Samantha O’Toole, and Creative Director Dylan Neuwirth

A major highlight of the night was welcoming back one of the co-founders, Jay Blazek, who traveled from New Zealand and brought some of his family to help mark the occasion. We had the chance to catch up in person, show him the updates we have made at the shop since his last visit, and even interview with him to reflect on the last 40 years - including the journey that led to the transition of ownership to Andre Lucero in 2012.

Jay’s visit felt like a full-circle moment. From his family’s roots in the neon world, to the legacy he helped build in Seattle, having him speak to the team about it reminded us how meaningful this moment truly is.

The team took the time to also recognize Andre for his leadership, especially his belief in people and his constant encouragement to rise to the occasion and give our best. Andre has undeniably guided Western Neon through continued growth, expanded capabilities and a progressive vision for signage and public art.

For the open house, we got the shop ready for show, freshly cleaned and newly expanded. We offered tours for guests where they could watch our glassbender Will give demos, our fabricator Zoriah walked people through some of our graphics equipment, and we talked shop with old and new friends. Outside, we enjoyed tacos, drinks, all amongst historical signs and ones in progress, and even the famous Rainier beer can fountain flowing strong.

The night wasn’t just about looking back, but as a reminder of why we do what we do and how our future is made possible by the people who’ve shaped it. As Seattle continues to evolve, we’re privileged to transform with it and continue to be a part of the ever-changing landscape.  Staying rooted in quality, craftsmanship, and creativity while always exploring new materials, technologies, and ideas.

We’re beyond grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey, from clients, WN team members, designers, community members, and are excited to keep creating, collaborating, and lighting up the next chapter.

Here’s to 40 more!
