Western Neon has been working with owner and herb master Jerry Traunfeld since the beginning when he opened Poppy in 2008 which is known for its Thali inspired dishes.Jerry was the Executive Chef for The Herbfarm in Woodinville for 17 years starting in 1990 which inspired him to publish two award-winning books, The Herbfarm Cookbook and The Herbel Kitchen. Traunfeld won the James Beard award in 2000 and Seattle Met’s Chef of the Year award for 2015. Jerry has also appeared on The New York Times, Fortune, Food and Wine Magazine, Bon Appetit Magazine, Sunset Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes and Gardens, The Splendid Table, and Bravo TV’s Top Chef Masters.

Jerry Traunfeld opened a Sichuan restaurant right next door to Poppy on Capitol Hill’s Broadway in 2015 and named it Lionhead. This sign is approximately 3’x4′. The logo, which is inspired by the Szechuan peppercorn, is routed out and backed by white acrylic with translucent tomato red vinyl. This unique sign is illuminated by uncoated ruby red neon both inside the cabinet as well as exposed on the lettering.

One unique practice that Jerry has implemented is building the cost of wages into his menu prices. The menu explains, “Our menu pricing allows us to pay an equitable wage to all employees. You pay only what you see (plus tax).”

We anticipate many more victories from Traunfeld and thank him for continuing to elevate wonderful Northwest ingredients!
